I love the different neighborhoods of Seattle. Each is beautiful and unique in its own way; it’s not just the views or the architecture, but the people and businesses in each neighborhood that give it a certain character.
When you ask locals to name a few things that come to mind when thinking about Fremont they immediately say Solstice Parade, Lenin statue, and the Troll sculpture. These are the most obvious traits of this neighborhood.
There are however, some very elegant businesses that don’t seem to sit well with the bohemian culture of Fremont, yet they fit there perfectly. One of them is the Essenza boutique. I discovered it in one of my strolling in the area, and since then I have to stop there every time I visit the neighborhood. It is a perfect place to indulge myself with something unique, or buy an unusual gift for a special person.
Becky Buford opened Essenza 17 years ago, after an inspiring visit to Provence. She and her husband, the contractor Jim Buford, created a place that reflects the old European elegance they were so impressed by in France. Becky travels around the glob several times a year, in her search for interesting and unique products. When the shop started, most of the products were from France, now there are also products from Italy, England, New Zealand, Japan, Morocco,Tunisia, Ethiopia, Turkey, and the USA.
Essenza has a wide selection of natural perfumes and organic skin care that Becky gathered from all over the world. If you are curious to smell real amber perfume, made from Ambergris of whales, you can find it in this store.
Becky is crazy about babies, and at the beginning, baby products took a big part of the store. As the store variety of products grew, she had to limit her baby collection to only selected brands. There is a sweet and adorable collection of baby clothing, baby room décor, and baby skin care products.
Some of my favorite products in the store are the Turkish towels. Wendy, Becky’s sister, who also works in the store, introduced me to these incredible towels, which are made from thin hand woven fabric; they are very absorbent and heavenly soft. I started with a hand towel and now I’m hooked. Essenza also carries a nice collection of unique bedding, soft cotton sleepwear, and cashmere robes.
Another favorite product of mine, is the Binchotan Facial Puff from Japan. It’s so popular that I learned to pre-order two at a time. I love the clean feel of my skin after using this sponge.
Essenza offers customers a wish list service, to help friends and relatives with finding the right gift for the right person. Another gift idea the in the store, is a nice piece of jewelry, from the wide selection of fine jewelry made by local artists. You will have a chance to meet one of these artist this coming Saturday, November 9th, during a Jamie Joseph trunk show in the store between 11am to 7pm.
